Enifer’s own words settle the question its press cycle keeps raising. In the same September 10, 2025 release announcing self-affirmed GRAS status for its PEKILO mycoprotein — the milestone that anchors a US human-food push — the Finnish biotech states plainly that its 3,000-tonne Kantvik plant “is expected to begin production in 2026 with a capacity of up to 3,000 tonnes a year, and will initially serve customers in the pet food sector, with food-ingredient production to follow soon after.” The regulatory story getting trade-press attention is about human food. The capacity and the only named customers are pet food and aquafeed. That is not a hidden discrepancy — Enifer disclosed it itself — but it is one the coverage built around the GRAS milestone does not mention.

The record, assembled

Every date below comes from a source we fetched directly, including Enifer’s own newsroom and the FDA’s public inventory.

Date Source What was stated
10 Jan 2024 AgFunderNews, Fish Farming Expert €12m (~$13.2m) EU NextGenerationEU grant announced; cumulative financing to date ~€25.5m (seed + €11m Series A, closed spring 2023, + the grant); Skretting (Nutreco) already trialing PEKILO Aqua in salmon feed
23 May 2024 Green Queen, AgFunderNews €24m in new financing (€15m Series B led by Taaleri Bioindustry Fund I, €7m Finnish Climate Fund loan, €2m Finnvera loan), combined with the January grant into “€36m raised in 2024”; cumulative company financing to date reported as €50m; €33m of the total costed to the Kantvik factory, €3m to R&D and novel food dossiers; completion targeted end of 2025
26 Aug 2024 Enifer Factory confirmed fully funded, to be built in Kantvik, Kirkkonummi
31 Oct 2024 Green Queen EFSA novel food dossier filed; CEO Simo Ellilä calls three years “a realistic timeline” for EU approval; Singapore filing expected “within a few months”; US GRAS filing described as coming later, on a longer timeline
17 Jun 2025 Enifer Main 150m³ fermenter installed at Kantvik; ramp-up “planned for early 2026”
10 Sep 2025 Enifer Self-affirmed GRAS achieved after independent expert panel review; notified GRAS submission to FDA described as underway; plant to “initially serve customers in the pet food sector, with food-ingredient production to follow soon after”
24 Mar 2026 Green Queen, FoodIngredientsFirst, Protein Report, World Bakers, Nutraceutical Business Review, Pet Food Processing Coordinated trade-press cycle reports Enifer has submitted a notified GRAS dossier to FDA; Elisa Arte (Head of Food R&D) quoted identically across outlets: “FDA-notified GRAS status removes a key internal barrier, allowing ingredient discussions to move beyond technical sampling”
1 Apr 2026 Pet Food Industry First 4-tonne commercial-scale production batch of PEKILO Pet completed, explicitly for pet food product development
23 Apr 2026 Vafo / Prima Pet Prima Pet (part of the VAFO Group) and Enifer announce a collaboration to develop a dry pet food product; test batches made at Prima Pet’s Nokia, Finland factory; palatability trials with cats and dogs to follow in spring 2026; Enifer states the Kantvik factory “will be completed… next autumn”
12 May 2026 AgFunderNews, Green Queen Enifer-Rovio Pet Foods collaboration disclosed, for a semi-moist dog treat, also at trial stage; separately, a 500-tonne/year demonstration plant with Brazilian partner FS (corn ethanol thin stillage feedstock) reported nearing completion
16 Sep 2026 Enifer “Commissioning officially begins” at Kantvik — “first equipment testing”; factory described as “in its final stages of becoming fully operational”

Two things stand out immediately. First, the plant’s completion date has moved at least twice without any source using the word “delay”: end of 2025 (May 2024) became “early 2026” ramp-up (June 2025) became commissioning that only started on 16 September 2026 — twelve days before this article was researched, and roughly nine months past the original target. Second, every commercial relationship Enifer has named publicly, across two verticals and more than two years of coverage, is described as testing, trialing or developing — never as a signed supply or offtake agreement.

Practical consequence. Treat “commercial-scale facility” and “commercial batch” language from this company as describing production capability, not contracted demand. None of the sources we fetched — including Enifer’s own newsroom — disclose a binding volume commitment from Prima Pet, Rovio, Skretting or any other named party.

What “initially serve pet food” actually forecloses

The FDA GRAS narrative is built for a human-food audience: the September 2025 release frames PEKILO’s dry, shelf-stable format against “plant-based alternatives, sports nutrition, and healthy snacking,” and the March 2026 press cycle has Elisa Arte talking about removing “a key internal barrier” for large food manufacturers. Read the same September release’s production section, though, and Enifer is explicit that the plant whose capacity underwrites all of this — the 3,000 tonnes a year at Kantvik — goes to pet food first, with “food-ingredient production to follow soon after.” No source we fetched puts a date or a tonnage split on “soon after.”

This matters because pet food and human food are not interchangeable outlets for the same ingredient spec. A dry mycoprotein cleared for use in dog treats and kibble does not thereby have a home in a US snack bar; the GRAS status under discussion is specific to food use, and Enifer’s own supply plan routes the plant’s early output elsewhere. The FDA review generating headlines and the capacity generating output are, on the company’s own account, sequenced to serve different customers first.

Practical consequence. A US food manufacturer reading the March 2026 coverage as “PEKILO is becoming available” should ask Enifer directly what fraction of Kantvik’s near-term output is contracted to pet food and aquafeed before treating a GRAS filing as a supply signal. On the public record, that fraction could be all of it.

The FDA filing that isn’t in FDA’s own inventory

We searched the FDA GRAS Notice Inventory — the agency’s public log of GRAS notifications — for “mycoprotein,” “Enifer,” “PEKILO,” “Fusarium” and “Paecilomyces” (the genus behind the PEKILO fermentation, per FoodNavigator’s 2024 coverage of the process). The mycoprotein search returns exactly one result: GRN 91, closed in 2002, for Quorn/Marlow Foods’ Fusarium venenatum mycoprotein — unrelated to Enifer. The Fusarium search surfaces a handful of unconnected notices, including GRN 1255 (closed 18 November 2025, for a Fusarium compactum mycelial biomass filed under a Chinese culture-collection strain designation, CGMCC 41312 — a separate company’s filing, not Enifer’s, and not PEKILO’s organism). “Enifer,” “PEKILO” and “Paecilomyces” return zero rows.

That is notable given the timeline above. Enifer’s own September 2025 release describes the notified GRAS submission as underway; four trade outlets reported on 24 March 2026 — over six months later — that the dossier had been submitted. As of 28 September 2026, more than six months after that reported submission, no Enifer or PEKILO notice appears in FDA’s inventory under any search term we tried. We can’t determine from the public record whether this reflects a filing still in FDA’s internal completeness review before it is logged, a notifier name or substance description that doesn’t match our search terms, or a submission that has not, in fact, reached the formal GRN stage described by the trade press. What we can say plainly is that the notice is not publicly visible yet, which readers evaluating “FDA GRAS review” as a near-term signal should weigh accordingly. Enifer is pursuing this in a period when the self-affirmed route itself is under regulatory pressure — FDA’s own proposed rule would give companies just a one-year window to convert existing self-affirmed GRAS conclusions to the notified pathway, a dynamic we detailed in our analysis of FDA’s mandatory GRAS notification proposal.

Practical consequence. Don’t cite “notified GRAS status” for PEKILO as an established regulatory fact until a GRN number appears in FDA’s inventory. Until then, the only confirmed US regulatory status is the September 2025 self-affirmed determination, which is a company-commissioned expert-panel conclusion, not an FDA action.

The funding figures reconcile — except one that doesn’t

Reported funding for Enifer clusters around several numbers that look inconsistent until their scopes are separated:

Figure Scope Source
€12m EU NextGenerationEU grant, announced Jan 2024 AgFunderNews, Fish Farming Expert
€24m New money raised in the May 2024 tranche (€15m Series B + €7m + €2m loans) Green Queen headline, AgFunderNews
€36m The €24m tranche plus the January €12m grant, described by Enifer as “raised in 2024” Enifer’s own September 2025 release; Green Queen
€33m Portion of the €36m costed specifically to Kantvik construction Green Queen
€50m Cumulative company financing (equity, loans, grants) since founding, as of October 2024 Green Queen

These are consistent, not contradictory: €50m cumulative includes the earlier ~€11m Series A (closed spring 2023) and seed funding, plus the €36m 2024 package, of which €33m is the factory build. Our brief for this piece flagged a claim that Enifer has raised “nearly €60 million” to date. We fetched the World Bakers article this figure is associated with in full and it contains no funding figure of any kind — no euro amount appears anywhere in the article text, only regulatory and product detail. No other source we checked, including Enifer’s own newsroom, states a cumulative total above €50m. We could not verify “nearly €60 million” and treat it as unconfirmed; the reliable cumulative figure, per Green Queen’s October 2024 update, is €50m.

Practical consequence. €50m against a stated €33m factory cost and a 3,000-tonne nameplate capacity puts Enifer’s disclosed capital cost at roughly €11,000 per annual tonne for the Kantvik line specifically — a figure we set alongside two other mycoprotein producers’ co-located capacity builds in our earlier analysis of mycoprotein plants sited next to existing industrial feedstock. That analysis remains the reference point for Enifer’s capex; this piece does not restate it.

The counter-argument

Sequencing pet food and aquafeed ahead of human food is a defensible, even conventional, market-entry strategy for a novel protein ingredient, not evidence that the human-food push is hollow. Pet food specifications are typically less stringent than human food on sensory uniformity and regulatory documentation, and a company can validate manufacturing consistency, palatability and supply reliability at commercial scale in that market before committing scarce early output to human-food customers who will demand tighter specs and larger minimum orders. CEO Simo Ellilä said as much directly in the AgFunderNews interview published 12 May 2026: “In the near term, pet food represents a clear commercial entry point,” while describing interest from Europe (pet food) and North America (human nutrition) as running in parallel rather than in competition.

It is also true that regulatory filings and commercial contracts run on different clocks almost everywhere, and a company filing for GRAS status a year or more before it has product to sell into that channel is normal, not evasive — Better Meat Co./BMC Ingredients’ Rhiza mycoprotein had FDA and Health Canada clearance years ahead of any operating commercial-scale plant, and that gap reflected slow capital deployment, not a bait-and-switch on the regulatory story. Enifer’s GRAS timeline predates its plant’s commissioning by roughly a year, which is consistent with sequencing a paperwork-heavy process ahead of a capital-heavy one.

The honest position is that the public record supports both readings and doesn’t resolve between them: a capital-disciplined company validating its ingredient in an easier market before it commits output to a harder one, and a company whose loudest recent press coverage is about a market it has not yet supplied.

What we could not establish

  • Whether Enifer’s notified GRAS dossier has been formally accepted for filing by FDA, or under what notifier name or substance description it might appear once (if) it is logged in the public inventory. No source we fetched supplies a GRN number.
  • What share of Kantvik’s 3,000-tonne capacity is allocated to pet food versus food-ingredient production, or over what period “soon after” for the human-food ramp resolves to a date.
  • Whether the Prima Pet or Rovio Pet Foods collaborations have converted, or are expected to convert, from development/trial agreements into supply contracts, and if so at what volume.
  • The status of Enifer’s UK novel food application — mentioned as a planned market in October 2024 coverage with no filing date given, and no later source we found updates it.
  • Whether EFSA’s novel food opinion or Singapore’s approval have progressed since October 2024, when Singapore filing was described as imminent and EU approval was estimated at three years out. We found no 2025 or 2026 source confirming either has closed.
  • The exact date the notified GRAS dossier was filed with FDA. Enifer’s own September 2025 release describes the process as “submitting”; the March 2026 trade-press cycle describes it in the past tense as “submitted,” with no outlet giving a specific filing date.
  • Detail on the 500-tonne/year Brazilian demonstration plant with partner FS, reported nearing completion in May 2026 coverage — we did not independently verify this facility’s status, feedstock economics, or intended market.

What to watch

  1. A GRN number for Enifer or PEKILO appearing in FDA’s GRAS Notice Inventory. Until then, “FDA-notified GRAS status” for PEKILO is a claim in press coverage, not a confirmed regulatory record.
  2. A disclosed tonnage or percentage split between pet food and human-food output at Kantvik, which would turn “initially serve pet food” from a sequencing statement into a measurable constraint.
  3. Conversion of the Prima Pet or Rovio collaborations from development trials into named supply agreements, with a volume attached.
  4. Full production status at Kantvik, given commissioning only began 16 September 2026 against an original end-2025 target — the next milestone to confirm is the plant reaching its stated 500kg/hour nameplate rate, not merely starting equipment tests.
  5. A named US food manufacturer customer, human-food GRAS status notwithstanding. As of this piece’s research, no source names one.
