LifeMate Editorial Desk is the house byline for analysis produced by the LifeMate Tech
editorial team. We use it for pieces built from public filings, regulatory records and
disclosed funding data rather than from a single reporter’s independent sourcing.
We are explicit about this because a great deal of trade publishing invents authors.
We would rather tell you plainly that a piece is desk analysis than attach a name that
does not correspond to a person you could actually contact.
How we work
Every factual claim is attributed to a named, linked source, listed at the foot of each
article. Where sources disagree, we say so in the text rather than quietly picking the
more convenient number.
We work from primary records wherever they exist — FDA GRAS notice numbers, EFSA
application status, company announcements, regulatory filings. Where we rely on a
third-party dataset, we name it and describe its methodology and limits, because a
funding figure means nothing without knowing what was counted and what was excluded.
We do not publish sponsored content under this byline. If that ever changes, it will be
labelled unmistakably and it will not be written by the editorial desk.
Corrections
We will get things wrong. When we do, the correction and its date are noted on the
article itself rather than made silently. If you find an error — or you are a company
we have covered and something is inaccurate — tell us and we will fix it.
Aeon launched Planet A Foods' ChoViva in June 2025. On 15 September 2026 it added three products made with Fuji Oil's Anoza M across 3,500 stores. Voyage Foods has handed exclusive B2B distribution to Cargill and left retail; Döhler has bought Nukoko. Cocoa-free now reaches the market through incumbents' channels.
FDA's letters on AGRN 26 and AGRN 33 describe Methylobacterium extorquens biomass as a fishmeal replacement for finfish at 10% and crustaceans at 6%. In 2026 Knip moved into 165,000-litre contract tanks and says JUV is 'not a commodity protein replacement'. The regulatory basis did not move.
Defra's July 2026 guidance says Great British novel food authorisations 'will cease to apply' under the SPS agreement, exclusivity included. The FSA's board paper says its authorisation service will no longer be needed. Precision breeding has a carve-out to fight for; novel foods do not.
Liberation Labs (2023), Voyage Foods (2024) and Plantible (2026) each closed a $25m USDA Business & Industry guaranteed loan, the programme maximum per borrower. USDA guarantees 80% of it and charges a 3% fee on that portion; the borrower still owes all of it. For a $115m plant, that is 22% of the capital.
AB 2244 reached the Governor on 8 September. Its disqualifying test cites only the additive limb of the state's UPF definition — eight FDA technical-effect classes out of thirty-two. A product high in saturated fat can still be certified. One containing methylcellulose cannot.
Interim accounts furnished nine days before the Perfecta retail launch show zero revenue for H1 2026, $264,000 of cost of goods sold, $1.06m of cash against a $3.3m half-year burn, and substantial doubt about the company continuing as a going concern.
Ÿnsect, Enorm, Aspire and AgroLoop failed building mega-factories, so the sector's answer was to put the larvae on the farm. Goterra entered administration on 3 June 2026; FarmInsect's Munich administrator ended operations in September. Its EU-funded project called the model 'profitable' nine months before it filed.
In July 2024 the Belgian mycoprotein start-up said it would 'rapidly' convert Metabolic Explorer's Carling biorefinery to 10,000 tonnes a year. Its August 2026 financing funds a 12 m³ demonstration unit on the same site, a plant built for 6,000 tonnes of chemicals and never expected to be profitable at that scale.
MFDS opened a 270-day route for cell-cultured food ingredients on 22 February 2024. Thirty months on, no recognition has been published, no applicant is named in any public record, and the food type a finished product would be sold under was only put out for comment on 30 June 2026. Comments closed on 31 August.
Six brazzein GRAS notices have closed with no questions since March 2024, from six notifiers. Each used the same Renwick substitution method and fed it a different sweetness number, so the exposure estimates differ 73-fold. A formulator's inclusion rate, and cost per unit of sweetness, move by the same factor.
Regulation (EU) 2026/1739 leaves 'burger', 'sausage' and 'nugget' free until 2029. The post-2027 CMO proposal carries its own 29-name list on a 12-month clock, and July amendments would add up to 21 processed-meat names plus a member-state opt-out. Beyond's 10-Q already books the risk.
The Commission adopted the Annex I delegated act on 13 July; the objection window closes on 13 September. We read the annex and the memorandum: 25 product codes assessed, six changed, and the additions get a one-year deferral the deletions do not. Palm-derived glycerol and fatty acids enter the list too.
Chile's first unicorn raised $235m at a $1.5bn valuation in 2021. Since 2024 it has handed North America to Kraft Heinz, sold Argentina and Uruguay to Molinos, closed Mexico without a buyer and sold Brazil to Ferrara. The only filing is a one-page Buenos Aires notice with no number in it. Chile has until December.
GFI Europe reports €236m raised in H1 2026, up 56% year on year. The same post puts global funding at €306m, down from €341m. Subtract one from the other and the rest of the world falls from roughly €190m to €70m. The rebound is a composition shift, not a recovery.
Vow's quail ran FSANZ's major procedure with two consultation rounds and produced two new standards, a new schedule and a Schedule 27 amendment. Gourmey's duck runs the general procedure with one round, because it only needs a listing in the schedule the first application created.
Nourish Ingredients says a 10-ton Creamilux run at SD Guthrie has removed manufacturing as a barrier to growth. The same interview puts that partner's capacity at up to 20 tons a day. The stated next steps — 100 tons, then 500 tons — are five and 25 days of one line.
USDA's 3 September report has regular WPC 80% softening, with buyers split on a drop toward $10, while whey protein isolate holds at $14 to the mid-$14s. NASS data shows why: low-protein WPC output fell 37.5% year-on-year while the high-protein grade rose 10.3%. 'Parity with whey' now has three answers.
Nine amendments to the EU novel food list this year share a stage no launch plan plots: the months between EFSA publishing an opinion and the Commission adopting a regulation. The seven-month statutory clock starts on a date the regulation never prints — and we got that wrong ourselves.
FDA proposed extending the Food Traceability Rule by 30 months in August 2025. Thirteen months later, RIN 0910-ZC21 still has exactly one document in the Federal Register — the proposal. The 20 January 2026 compliance date passed 229 days ago. What sits between it and enforcement is a line in an appropriations act.
Unibio's audited accounts put its indicated demand pipeline at 48,000 tonnes a year — letters of intent and MOUs, by the company's own definition. The Jubail plant SIIG has costed at SAR 1.4 billion will make 50,000. The accounts also flag the 2028 start date and suspend all travel to the region.
Adisseo's own Shanghai Stock Exchange filing puts Calysseo's 2025 operating revenue at USD 0.71m against a net loss of USD 15.52m. Production is suspended because the plant has not yet met its design standards. The loan matured on 30 June and was not renewed.
We said in August we had not read the FDA's letter on GRN 1268 and would not quote what we had not seen. We have now read it. It dates the deficiency email to 11 February 2026 and the withdrawal request to 13 February — day 176 and day 178 of a 180-day clock.
MOA Foodtech's February 2025 headline was €2.3m of grant plus €12.5m of EIC Fund equity. Its September 2026 round activates the first €1m tranche of that equity and brings total financing raised since 2020 to €12.3m — less than the single commitment announced 562 days earlier.
No Meat Factory's first WARN notice set closure for 16 September and counted 123 workers. An amended notice received on 28 July said operations had already stopped on 27 July, affecting about 113. Federal rules do allow notice after the fact — but they place the burden of proof on the employer.
dsm-firmenich says its 70%-protein yeast can compete with fishmeal at EUR 3,000 a tonne and replace whey that has reached USD 25 to 28 a kilo. On a protein basis those reference prices are six to eight times apart, and the company has not said which one it will sell at.
On 14 July ADM named Clinton, Iowa as the US base for EVERY's OvoPro, citing its "industry-leading precision fermentation capabilities". On 21 August the state awarded $2.23m against a $55.5m project to convert 463,503 sq ft of underutilised fermentation space at the same site. Both documents are correct.
A three-significant-figure cost multiple, disclosed in a LinkedIn post, attached to a round of undisclosed size, eleven months after the company cut its Leuven staff. The ratio is precise. Every quantity it is a ratio of is missing, including the resulting cost per kilogram.
Phytolon's beetroot red became 21 CFR 73.39 on 6 February 2026. One objection filed on 5 March suspended it indefinitely. Colours cannot use the GRAS route at all — FDA says so verbatim in its own protein letters — so the replacement for Red 40 is on a slower clock than the 2026 phase-out it is meant to serve.
The same 6,500–7,650 tonnes of non-binding commitments were reported against a 12,800-tonne Factory 02 in July 2025 and a 6,400-tonne Factory 02 in December. No customer was added. The denominator halved. The binding order book is EUR 0.2 million.
GRN 1241 is routinely summarised as clearing beta-lactoglobulin at up to 35%. That ceiling applies to nutritional bars alone. Yogurt is capped at 8% and milk at 6% — and FermWhey Gel, the product Verley says removes casein from spoonable dairy, is not in the notice at all.
UPSIDE Foods terminated its $50m stalking-horse bid on 14 August. The receiver's 17 August filing records no qualifying bids by the deadline, no auction and no sale hearing. The bid that vanished was already below the two senior secured claims on the file.
dsm-firmenich's Protopia can enter the EU without a novel food authorisation because Ireland ruled Cyberlindnera jadinii not novel under Article 4. Yarrowia lipolytica biomass sits on the same EFSA QPS list with the same qualification, and still took a two-year authorisation.
Monde Nissin's Protein segment turned ₱7,381m of H1 2026 sales into ₱106m of core net income after tax. The filing prints the margin itself: 1.4%. Impairments booked against the same business since 2022 come to roughly ₱40.7bn on our arithmetic.
SB1 is a bulk protein dosed at 10–20 grams per serving. Thryvia is made from the same bacterium at around 200mg. Cofounder Bryan Tracy says the constraint on the protein is the capital to build beyond the Döhler partnership — and the new ingredient fits inside the footprint he already has.
USDA publishes WPC 34% with a full basis statement. WPC 80% appears only in narrative commentary, with no unit printed in the sentence. Across five months the same grade was quoted at $32,000/tonne, $14.50/lb, €16,900/tonne and — for a US price — €18,204/tonne.
GFI's 2026 report calls non-food diversification common, citing IntegriCulture's profitability. Upside Foods opened a life-sciences division, Uncommon Bio moved to therapeutics, Wildtype to skincare. Cultimate sold one cultivated-fat ingredient into cultivated meat, and wound down in August.
Fermify's GRN 1228 covered six food categories at up to 15%. It closed at the notifier's request on 13 June 2025 and was never resubmitted. Formo and NewMilkBuzz's GRN 1312 covers cheese analogs alone, at up to 25g per 100g, and the agency's letter line still reads Pending.
Angel Yeast's Yichang line runs 11,000 tonnes a year at over 80% protein. The Protein Brewery plans 600 tonnes for 2027 at about 50%. These are the two producers who publish the number that makes their tonnes convertible — and converting them widens the gap instead of closing it.
Europe's most-used precision fermentation contract site lists one industrial culture size on its own website: 160 m³. A silk protein company for textiles and automotive now has a dedicated line of exactly that size. Neither party says whether any is left.
Beyond Steak Filet delivers 28g of protein per 127g filet. Beyond Meat has not published how much of that protein is mycelium — and the FAQ block on the product's own page says the protein comes from wheat gluten and faba beans.
Britain published supplementary guidance for precision and biomass fermentation on 20 March 2026. It sets DIAAS as the preferred protein-quality score, INFOGEST as the default method, and around 12% inclusion as the line above which a digestibility assay is expected.
The $4.3bn CVC deal converts to about $3.8bn of net cash, and IFF's own filings say where it goes: over $1bn of debt reduction and $2.5bn of buybacks. None of it returns to the food ingredients layer.
The first purpose-built precision fermentation plant in the US was to produce commercially by end-2024. Three restatements later the date is 'in 2026', and no start has been announced. The 600,000-litre nameplate anchoring its customer commitments is a vessel volume, not an output.
Verley's '$38m Series A' is €25m of equity plus €7m of non-dilutive support from Bpifrance. Standing Ovation's '$34.2m' is €25m of equity plus €5m from Bpifrance and a banking syndicate. Neither says whether that money is a grant, a repayable advance or a loan, and the same state institution sits on both sides.
ORF Genetics supplies MESOkine growth factors to roughly 150 companies including Mosa Meat, Vow and Aleph Farms. The only price signal it has published is a relative one from 2020: 50% to 60% below unnamed competitors. The product is a barley seed extract, not a purified protein, so per-gram comparisons fail.
The figures formulators cite for mycoprotein — a 5,320 Pa elastic modulus, 380-minute foam stability, a 12.80 m²/g emulsifying activity index — were measured on streams from the Quorn fermentation of Fusarium venenatum. Four other fungal biomasses are now cleared, with compositional specifications only.
The SFA's first published List of Approved Novel Foods covers 14 products cleared between 21 May 2019 and 17 October 2025. It names no applicants, but it discloses fetal bovine serum in the 2020 cultivated chicken file, and bioreactors of 200 to 20,000 litres with a minimum 30 g/L harvest density for cultured quail.
The Bioreactor RF launched on 'up to 12% lower operational costs'. Five footnotes disclose the model: a €2.87m baseline, €219,000 from cutting eight operators to five, €121,000 from a lower contamination rate. Almost no vendor in this sector shows that much, and showing it makes the arithmetic checkable.
The only London-listed pure-play clean-food portfolio publishes a quarterly NAV built from other investors' priced rounds. At 30 June 2026 that NAV was 12.93p a share and the market paid 5.64p. Its most recent audited accounts cover a year that ended fourteen months ago.
The Biotech Act proposal opens regulatory sandboxes to food enzymes, additives, processing aids and production processes — then excludes novel foods by name, in Article 56(7). The line is drawn at the regulatory class of the output, not the risk of the process, and eight trade bodies have told the Commission so.
Three European mycelium producers announced capacity in 2026: a wet whole-cut, a dried powder at 50% protein, and a finished oat-fungi food at 14%. No announcement says which basis its tonnes use. Rank them by capital per announced tonne and Millow looks cheap; rank them by tonne of protein and it is the dearest.
A beta-casein made by yeast is not milk and, on FSANZ's own reading, does not meet the legal definition of milk. FSANZ proposes to require it be declared as milk anyway, plus a front-of-pack advisory, and says the UK and EU approach does not adequately address the risk.
Eight months after liquidation, the only Ÿnsect asset with a buyer is the 2016 pilot, bought by a co-founder's new firm to make fertiliser. The flagship farm at Poulainville — inaugurated in 2021, never finished, needing a reported €130m to complete — is now marketed on its power connection.
ADIO's release says the partnership 'will explore the establishment' of a 4-million-litre facility. Ten months on, no capex, site, timeline, equipment order or FID has been disclosed — and 4 million litres is also Liberation Labs' published expansion target for Richmond.
Green Queen's tracker reports 82 alternative-protein consolidation events since September 2024. GFI's State of the Industry report gives at least 19 plant-based acquisitions for 2025. Neither states its inclusion rule prominently, and aligned on unit and window the gap nearly closes.
NHC Announcement No. 7 of 2025, issued 27 November 2025, approved Fusarium venenatum protein on strains A3/5 and TB01, with a 50% minimum protein spec and four excluded populations but no daily intake limit. Fushine's disclosed line is 1,200 tonnes against Quorn's 67,000.
EFSA's file on Rhizomucor pusillus biomass prints both numbers: crude protein from nitrogen, and true protein from amino acids. They are 10.6 g/100 g apart. Only the higher one is legal on a European label, and most microbial protein dossiers never publish the lower one at all.
Docket FDA-2025-N-3262, RIN 0910-AJ02, comments close 9 December 2026. There is no grandfathering clause: proposed § 170.205(a) reaches substances already in the food supply. The only relief is a streamlined submission under a new subpart F, open for one year after the final rule takes effect.
The June 2026 Huvepharma release publishes a 4x capacity multiple and a 550% order multiple with no base for either. A base does exist — 63,000 litres in 2025, doubled at the start of 2026 — but it was given to a trade interviewer, not the wire. Here is what is on the record.
GFI's June 2025 meta-analysis puts biomass fermentation at $4–6/kg against beef and pork at $6–15/kg. One is a modelled production cost, the other a market price — and GFI's own protein-normalised figures imply its fungal models span 12.5% to 54% protein.
Solar Foods hit the parameters for its full 160-tonne design capacity in October 2025 and booked EUR 0.1 million of revenue in the first half of 2026. Calysta's Chongqing plant is rated at 20,000 tonnes. Same technology, different feedstock, different buyer.
The FDA's GRAS inventory holds fifteen lactoferrin notices. None covers recombinant human lactoferrin: the three that ever did, filed 2004 to 2007, were all withdrawn at the notifier's request. Helaina self-affirmed instead — and infant formula is a stricter pathway again.
Schedule 17 of the Environment Act 2021 created a forest-risk-commodity due diligence regime five years ago. The regulations that would commence it still have not been made. The EUDR clock runs anyway, and the two regimes are not the same rule.
The Gujarat joint venture with Zydus was announced for Q1 2026, then moved to H2 2026. Four years after FSSAI cleared the product for India, there is still no disclosed capacity, no disclosed capex, and no Indian market — the output is for export.
The company's own releases put contracted revenue at 'approximately $450 million' and never state a currency. Green Queen read it as Canadian and converted; vegconomist and the wire did not. Phytokana wrote 'C$38 million' on its own website in 2024, so the omission is a change in practice.
Coverage of Ajinomoto's transferrin replacement cites a GFI analysis for the claim that albumin and transferrin drive 95% of cultivated meat's manufacturing costs. That analysis says growth factors are 95% of media cost — and in its own table, transferrin is $85,600 of a $7.54m batch.
USDA's WPC 34% series ran $1.52 to $2.18 a pound this year and is being cited as the reason formulators want precision-fermented egg protein. The grade that actually competes in fortification, WPC 80%, was quoted at $12 to $13 in August.
GFI APAC's July report says a $100m US facility costs RMB100m in China. The source is a rule of thumb from the companies selling the capacity, backed by one non-public speech. Its flagship commercial-scale run was six tonnes — and GFI's own 2023 analysis said pharma capacity is functionally inaccessible to food.
The FDA inventory lists five cultivated meat clearances. Eight states now prohibit the sale of the products. In March a federal appeals court held that federal inspection law does not stop a state banning a federally cleared meat — and one of the five clearance holders is being auctioned this week.
Human milk oligosaccharides are the precision-fermentation category that actually scaled. The four Western incumbents have never published a capacity figure. The Chinese entrants disclose tonnages, answered a price question on a stock exchange platform — and the price has roughly halved.
Parima's cultivated duck is quoted at €7/kg, at a 99% cut on earlier runs, at €5–10/kg as a target, and — by the same consultancy that produced the €7 — at low €40s/kg industry-wide for 2026. Each is defensible. None is comparable, and one changed status from model to fact without new evidence.
Yantai Shuangta faces a 122.19% US dumping margin and a 67.4% EU provisional duty, and pays no Canadian anti-dumping duty at all — Canada terminated that case. The US and Canada exclude texturized pea protein from scope; the EU deliberately does not, and told the exporters the other two rulings were irrelevant.
JOYN Foods says its frozen mycelium costs 25–30% less than the cheapest commodity beef in the US. Black Sheep Foods says its extruded wheat-and-fava protein is around 33% cheaper than beef. Both are specified by inclusion rate rather than protein equivalence — the inverse of how precision-fermented isolates are sold.
Enifer, ENOUGH and Planetary have each built beside a sugar refinery, a starch plant or an ethanol mill, and none of them used a contract manufacturer. Enifer's €33m for 3,000 tonnes a year is the only disclosed capital cost in the set: €11,000 per annual tonne, a useful number to hold against the sub-$1/kg claims.
GFI counted $881m of alternative protein funding in 2025 and named five consolidation deals. In three of them the acquirer was another startup, not an incumbent — and the disclosed prize was bioreactor capacity, cell lines and regulatory filings rather than revenue.
The Commission adopted the implementing regulation for Fermotein on 3 July 2026, six years after the dossier went in. Four months earlier the FDA closed GRN 1268 at the company's own request, after telling it the notice had deficiencies. The assumption that the US is the fast route just failed a test.
Döhler is now producing Superbrewed Food's SB1 commercially — fermentation in the Netherlands, spray drying in Germany — and has invested through Döhler Ventures. Superbrewed's founder says a completed tech transfer is what separates this from the contract-manufacturing 'paper deals' being signed across the sector.
Singapore cleared the Thin-Cut Steak on 4 August 2026, roughly 47 months after Aleph filed. The steak is 10–20% cultivated cells, and the contract manufacturer's line is not operational until H1 2027. Israel's 2023 clearance was conditional on a GMP inspection of a plant Aleph has since stepped back from.
Believer Meats raised $387m and spent roughly $154m on its Wilson plant. UPSIDE Foods' $50m stalking-horse bid sets the floor, with an auction due on 17 August — while a separate Israeli process sells the cell lines, media recipes and control software, some of it sitting in freezers inside that same building.
EFSA's register logs the application on 13 February 2026, 387 days after Mosa Meat said it had filed with the Commission — and by 30 June it still had not been validated, so the nine-month assessment clock had not started. Of the 15 dossiers EFSA did validate in H1 2026, one was a precision-fermented protein.
Sugar is the one input in this industry with a published market price. Run it through GFI's own case-study assumptions and feedstock comes out at roughly a fifth of unit cost, not half — because at 0.13 grams of protein per gram of glucose, you are buying 7.7kg of sugar per kilogram of product.
Meatly has disclosed two hard unit costs almost nobody else in cultivated meat will publish. Neither of them is the number that decides whether the business works — and the only figure it has given for that is the word 'double figures'.
Leprino Foods holds exclusive worldwide rights to Fooditive's precision-fermented casein in cheese — and a non-exclusive licence everywhere else. Four companies have now picked four different owners of the route to market, and not one of them has an FDA no-questions letter.
The FSA's £1.6m programme runs to February 2027 with one headline KPI: complete risk assessments for two cell-cultivated product applications. A risk assessment is not market authorisation — and no cell-cultivated product has yet been authorised for human consumption in Great Britain.
Vow beat its own 2025 output forecast by roughly twofold, runs the largest food-grade cell-culture line in the world, and has an approval that created an entire regulatory category. It has also cut staff twice, changed chief executive, and moved from selling its own food to manufacturing other companies'.
The Better Meat Co disclosed offtake agreements and letters of intent for 33 tonnes of dry mycoprotein a month — then said it could not commercially supply large CPG brands until it scaled. ENOUGH and Enifer took the two available ways out of that trap.
Regulation (EU) 2025/2650 moved the deadline to 30 December 2026. The April review operators were waiting on arrived on 4 May 2026 as guidance, not legislation — and the Commission has now said three times it will not reopen the text.
Everyone in alternative protein agrees fermentation capacity is the bottleneck. This is what closing it actually looks like: Liberation Labs' 600,000-litre Richmond plant, plus an assembled map of who has tanks, who is renting and who is stuck — in four incompatible units.
Remilk cleared the US in February 2023, Israel three months later, and Singapore alongside them — then withdrew its EU application entirely. One company, four regulators, four outcomes. A practical comparison of launch-market sequencing.
Believer Meats, Meatable and SCiFi Foods raised more than half a billion dollars combined and still shut down. CellRev and Upstream Foods, suppliers to that same industry, raised a fraction of that and failed on the same timeline — testing the 'picks-and-shovels' thesis against the actual data.
A full accounting of every FDA GRAS clearance for precision-fermented protein since Impossible Foods' 2018 leghemoglobin — updating our earlier count of seven — with the submission-to-clearance timeline for each, and why the pace roughly tripled last year.
FSMA 204, the FDA's flagship food-traceability rule, names shell eggs, soft cheese and seafood as high-risk — not cultivated meat or precision-fermented protein. Both are traced through a separate, older USDA-FDA framework built for conventional meat, with different obligations and a different enforcement rhythm.
A $154 million plant, full FDA and USDA clearance, and more than $390 million raised — then insolvency within six weeks of full approval. Its assets are now up for sale to rival UPSIDE Foods for $50 million, with a court hearing set for 20 August 2026.
Perfect Day's β-lactoglobulin and EVERY's ovalbumin are molecularly identical to the animal proteins they replace — and still demand a different formulation approach, a mandatory allergen label, and specifications the natural version never needed. A practical brief for product developers.
Twenty-three disclosed rounds and $367m over twelve months — but the top ten deals took 84% of it, and nothing crossed $100m. A breakdown of where capital actually went, which categories are being quietly repriced, and what investors now require before writing a cheque.
Perfect Day's EU dossier died in validation after two years. Remilk withdrew. Neither ever reached scientific assessment. A look at why the Novel Food pathway is pushing food-tech launches out of Europe — and whether the Biotech Act changes anything.
GFI screened 190 publications and found four techno-economic models for precision-fermented food protein. Their estimates span under $20/kg to $15,000/kg — with nothing in the $20–200 band where the industry actually operates.
